Dolphins and sharks live in the ocean. The ocean has three layers. The sunlit zone is the first layer. At this layer the sun warms the water. The sunlit layer goes down 600 feet deep. The sunlight warms the water and most dolphins and sharks live there. Whales, turtles, squid, jellyfish and thousands of other animals live in the sunlit layer too.
The twilight layer is the second layer in the ocean. It does not get a lot of sunlight. The twilight layer goes down 3000 feet deep. Only a little bit of sun reaches down there and that is why plants don’t grow. Some sharks do live in the twilight section of the ocean but dolphins can’t.
The midnight layer is the third layer in the ocean. It is dark and cold down there because no light can shine down that far. The midnight layer goes down 20,000 feet deep and the temperature is freezing most of the time. Only odd and amazing fish can live in the midnight layer of the ocean.
Tiger Sharks, which are the sharks that I am studying, eat garbage that people drop in the ocean. Because they eat this garbage, they are called the garbage cans of the ocean. This garbage makes them throw up if they eat too much.
A tiger shark can weigh over 2,000 pounds and grow as long as 10 to 20 feet. They are named tiger sharks because they have strips down their back but they are dark gray and not tan like tigers in the jungle.
